ShotRods
The fastest way to remediate slips and acheive instant slope reinforcement.
ShotRods have been used as a highly successful tool to remediate slips and geotechnical failures in the US for over 15 years. Hiway GeoTechnical recently introduced ShotRod technology to NZ and provides our customers with cost effective solutions to slope stability and specific geotechnical problems.
In 2006 Hiway GeoTechnical (formally Hiway Stabilizers Environmental) embarked on a technology transfer agreement with the original inventor in the US to bring the technology to New Zealand and through collaboration and innovation have further developed the ShotRods technology and equipment to new levels of performance.
How it Works
Steel or fibreglass rods, up to 6.5m long, are "fired" into the ground using high pressure compressed air. The rods are installed at sufficiently close spacing to create a reinforced soil block which prevents failures occurring, both within, throughout and surrounding the block.
Hiways have the in-house design capability to model site conditions accurately using the latest generation finite element software. This allows modeling of soil behaviour, lateral movement and settlement, plus the prediction of post installation performance. This level of expertise has been developed in-house from the close association with our geotechnical design partners for over the past six years.

Rapid Response
The ShotRod rig can be transported on standard low loader transportation equipment and can mobilise anywhere in NZ at short notice. The rods can be installed at a rate of up to 60-80 per day, which equates to over 100m2 of slope to be stabilised daily.
Applications
Shotrods are ideal in the following applications:
- Slope stabilisation (to form a reinforced soil block)
- Micro piles (to support shallow foundations)
- Temporary Works (excavation support)
- Horizontal drains (to facilitate reduction in groundwater)
- Where additional width is required, ShotRods can be combined with an economical Ground Reinforced Soil (GRS) wall, with either block or geogrid facing
- Additional face support, in situations of local scour, can be incorporated using either shotcrete, steel mesh or a more organic vegetation surfacing alternative
Levels of Service
Hiways are proud of their reputation of leading the industry in providing innovative, "one stop-shop" solutions. This is reflected in the company twice winning the New Zealand Road Innovation award.
The in-house team of dedicated, professional engineers can investigate, design and manage the repair of roading/embankment failures from start to finish.
Upon request, we will inspect and offer a no obligation preliminary cost and feasibility report to our customers, free of charge. Following review and acceptance from our clients, we will complete detailed design and investigation work and will confirm lump sum pricing and final designs to clients delivering a one stop shop philosophy.
Often, and as required we will commission independent reviewing of designs by external professionals. Rapid project completion is the hallmark of our business, most ShotRod projects can be designed and completed within several weeks.
